Training
Guidelines for Commercial Management Specialists Corporate Membership The Institution offers two senior professional grades of membership for those employed within the civil engineering surveying industry, namely the Corporate Member (MInstCES) and Fellow (FInstCES) grades. In order to become a Corporate Member of the Institution a candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have appropriate qualifications and experience to gain this professional status. There are four main requirements for this grade of membership:
A series of Training Guidelines have been prepared by the Institution, to offer guidance to Affiliate, Graduate and Associate Members on the training and experience requirements and standards expected from a candidate for the Corporate Member grade application. Such guidelines have been prepared for both commercial management and geospatial engineering specialists. This document outlines the Institution's training and experience requirements of commercial management specialists who are applying for the Corporate Member grade of membership. Commercial

The
ICES Core Training Objectives These Core Training Objectives have been developed by the Institution to accommodate the various professional areas where Affiliate, Graduate and Associate Members are employed. The Core Training Objectives for commercial management candidates are as follows:
A set of competencies have been determined for each Core Training Objective. These are referred to as the Range of Elements. A candidate is expected to satisfy a set level of achievement for each of the Elements to ensure that they achieve the required training and experience for the Corporate Member grade. The level of achievement is referred to as a Standard. The Training Guidelines allow for, and indeed encourage, the candidate to provide brief details of the level of experience gained in respect of each Core Training Objective, to further demonstrate ability to apply knowledge, understanding and skills in performing to the standards required by the Institution. The
Range of Elements and Standard expected for each of the Core Training
Objectives are clearly stated on the Institution's Core Training Objectives
Assessment Form. The Assessment Form is available for download as a pdf
document by clicking here.

Many large organisations already have formal training schemes and programmes in place and the Institution's Training Guidelines have been designed to ensure that such existing schemes can, if necessary, be adjusted to incorporate essential ICES Core Training Objectives. Where no such scheme presently exists, these Training Guidelines can provide a basic model to aid the structuring of any scheme or programme which may be under consideration by a company. It should be noted that all training schemes incorporating the ICES Training Guidelines must use the Institution's Core Training Objectives Assessment Form and retain its reference system. All training schemes, whether already in place or at a conceptual stage, must be validated by the Institution. This validation will be carried out by the Institution's Education, Training and Membership Committee. Employers may, if they wish, incorporate additional company-specific training objectives to supplement the Core Training Objectives. For those members wishing to complete the Training Guidelines individually, the ICES will, on request, provide assistance in assigning an approved Supervisor or Mentor. The Supervisor/Mentor may or may not have a direct connection with the member's field of work but will have the necessary knowledge, competence and experience in civil engineering surveying to undertake such a role (selected from Corporate Members or Fellows of the Institution). The Training Guidelines also form the basis of the ICES Approved Training Schemes, which are run in-house by a number of major contractors. Those members employed by such companies and who choose to participate in this training scheme will also work towards completing the ICES Core Training Objectives. The Institution believes that, where practical, employers of commercial management trainees should encourage their employees to satisfy the Institution's criteria for Corporate Membership once they have acquired the necessary training and work experience. By providing a structured training scheme in-house, such as the ICES Approved Training Scheme, they can help their employees to achieve this goal as soon as practicable. In support of this policy, the Institution organises a range of training courses and workshops, which are held at various locations throughout the year at reasonable cost. Details of these courses and workshops can be obtained from the Training Officer at ICES Head Office. To successfully complete the Institution's Core Training Objectives, a candidate must satisfy the Standard set for each of the Range of Elements within all Core Training Objectives. A candidate will be required to register their interest with the Institution for the Core Training Objectives Assessment. A candidate or if required, the Institution, will appoint a Supervisor or Mentor who will be able to offer guidance and support. The Supervisor/Mentor will establish with the candidate at the onset their levels of achievement. Actual levels of achievement will be monitored and recorded during an annual review meeting between the Supervisor/Mentor and the candidate. During this meeting, the Supervisor/Mentor should approve those Elements of the Core Training Objectives that have been successfully completed by the candidate to the Standard set by the Institution. It is recommended that the Supervisor/Mentor for this review meeting is a Corporate Member or Fellow of the Institution. The candidate will be required to attend a Training Objectives Review with their Supervisor/Mentor following the completion of all Core Training Objectives. During the Review, the Supervisor/Mentor will sign the Core Training Objectives Assessment Form to certify successful completion. The Supervisor/Mentor for the Training Objectives Review should ideally be a Member of the Institution or a fellow work colleague. Alternatively, the Institution would assign someone to act as a Supervisor/Mentor. In both instances, the Supervisor/Mentor must have been identified and approved by the Institution prior to the Training Objectives Review taking place. It is advised that the Objectives are approved by the Supervisor/Mentor on an ongoing basis (particularly if the Member is working for a company with an ICES Approved Training Scheme). Alternatively, a candidate should meet with their Supervisor/Mentor to review all the Objectives when they are eligible to upgrade to the Corporate Member grade of membership. Once the Core Training Objectives have been approved by the Supervisor/Mentor, the candidate would be expected to submit to the Institution's Education, Training and Membership Officer, the Approved Core Training Objectives Assessment Form signed by the Supervisor/Mentor, together with a written Summary Report of approximately 1500 words to demonstrate how the Objectives have been achieved. A Graduate, Affiliate or Associate Member who has completed all of the requirements for the Core Training Objectives and has an ICES accredited qualification or other approved cognate degree, together with a minimum of three years relevant experience, may apply to upgrade to the Corporate Member (MInstCES) grade. For those who do not to complete the Core Training Objectives, the relevant experience requirement for upgrade to this membership grade is a minimum of five years. The
achievement of the Institution's Core Training Objectives in itself will
not guarantee that a candidates application for the Corporate Member grade
will be successful, but should ensure a sound and broad base of training
and experience on which the candidate can build the professional and managerial
competencies required for this grade of membership. Tel:
