What
is the Corporate Review Interview?
The
Corporate Review Interview is a formal interview and discussion forum,
and is a means for the Institution to effectively and fairly assess applications
for the Corporate Member grade.
The
Corporate Review Interview aims to provide the candidate with the opportunity
to demonstrate his/her knowledge, understanding, competence and experience
in civil engineering surveying.
The
Interview Panel will in turn discuss with the candidate the information
provided within the written application and during the Interview in order
to corroborate the information submitted.
What
will be expected of you during the Corporate Review Interview?
The
Interview will last one hour and falls into three parts:
Part
One - The Presentation
All
candidates are asked to prepare and give an informal 10-15 minute presentation
about a particular project (normally the project described in the Experience
Report).
The presentation should be given without the use of audio visual aids.
Part
Two - Presentation Review
The Interview Panel will question the candidate for 10-15 minutes
about the content of the presentation.
Part
Three - Question and Answer Session
The Interview Panel will put forward a series of questions to the
candidate concerning the following areas (emphasis is placed on questioning
about the candidate's professional specialism):

Civil Engineering Industry
Professional Conduct
Professional and Personal Integrity
Legislation Affecting the Industry

Knowledge of Professional Practice and Procedures
Commercial management candidates, for example:
Methods of Measurement
Specification

Quality Assurance
Law
Health and Safety Legislation
Geospatial engineering candidates, for example:
Survey Specifications
Survey Conditions of Contract
Dimensional Control
GPS
Photogrammetry/Remote Sensing
GIS

Health and Safety Legislation
- Knowledge
of the Civil Engineering Industry
All candidates should have sound knowledge of how the industry works,
how projects are managed, how they are funded, who the major players
are, its history and academic basis.

Professional Code of Conduct
All candidates should be aware of, and demonstrate an intention to act
in accordance with, the Institution's Rules of Professional Conduct
and Disciplinary Regulations.
Candidates should possess the highest levels of integrity and objectivity
and should recognise their duties to clients, employers and the community.
- Current
Legislation Affecting the Candidates Industry and Profession
All candidates should display an adequate knowledge of current statutory
developments and should be able to demonstrate their alertness by discussing
possible changes in the future.

Communication
Candidates must demonstrate ability to communicate their ideas and knowledge
clearly, concisely and with confidence.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Candidates may be questioned on aspects of their CPD records and asked
to explain how they plan their development.
- Institution
Involvement
Candidates may be questioned about their commitment to, and involvement
with, the Institution, both past and future (e.g. attendance at regional
meetings, encouraging colleagues to join and promoting the Institution).
The
Interview Panel
The
Interview Panel normally consists of three Institution Fellows. Panellists
undergo interview training. The performance of panels and the standards
expected from candidates are constantly monitored by a team of moderators.
Panellists serve the Institution on a voluntary basis.
Appeals
Should
a candidate wish to appeal against the decision of the Corporate Review
Interview Panel, the following procedures would apply:

Payment of a £200 fee (refundable if the appeal is successful).

The candidate must make a statement indicating the reasons for lodging
the appeal.

The Chairman of the original Interview Panel will also be asked to write
a statement about the conduct and decision of the Panel.

The appeal will be considered by an Appeals Panel (appointed by the
ICES President).

The Appeals Panel will submit their findings to the Chair of the Institution's
Education, Training and Membership Committee, who in turn will communicate
the outcome to the candidate.

The decision of the Chair of the Institution's Education, Training and
Membership Committee is final.
The
ICES Corporate Entry Assessment is a project based dissertation which,
if successfully completed, meets the academic requirements for upgrade
to the Corporate Member grade of membership and satisfies all the requirements
for the Graduate Member
grade of membership.
