Member Joins ET&M Committee Richard Maltby is a busy practising geospatial engineering surveyor and a Director of his established family-owned business, Maltby Land Surveys Ltd, which employs over 30 people across three offices in Warwick, York and its headquarters in Horsham. He is also the Chairman of the Technical Committee of The Survey Association (TSA); a representative organisation of UK private surveying firms, which boasts over 80 Member Companies. Over a five year period, Richard worked with The Survey Association to design a comprehensive course to provide structured training for technicians employed in the various fields comprising geospatial engineering surveying. This course is titled Introduction to Surveying and is held at The Survey Centre in Worcester. The Introduction to Surveying course has since been awarded accreditation by the ICES following a successful application made through the Institution's ET&M Committee, which was co-ordinated by Richard on behalf of The Survey Association. This course has generated much interest and TSA has also submitted applications for the NVQ Level 3 standard and other professional institution course accreditation. Richard was duly awarded the Institution's Richard Carter Prize in September 2002, as Geospatial Engineering Surveyor of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the education and training of geospatial engineering technicians following the introduction of this course. Richard said "I am delighted to have been appointed to the Education, Training and Membership Committee. I see this as an excellent opportunity to expand the training requirements essential to the industry and to develop stronger links between the Institution and The Survey Association." The Education, Training and Membership Committee is responsible for establishing educational and training standards for civil engineering surveyors through the accreditation of academic courses and the provision of training guidelines, a continuing professional development scheme and a range of training courses and workshops. Its responsibilities also encompass the establishment of the Institution's membership criteria and the administration of membership applications. The Committee meets once every quarter at the ICES Head Offices in Sale, Cheshire. |
