ICES Accredits First Masters Course
The University of Plymouth has received confirmation that its postgraduate course, the Masters of Science (MSc) in Hydrography has been awarded accreditation by the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES). This is the first masters course to have been accredited by the Institution. This one-year postgraduate course for full time students is offered by the university's Faculty of Science and aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the scientific and technological basis of hydrography, relevant to research and development needs in the exploration and management of marine studies.

Hydrography is a part of marine science which is concerned with the measurement, description and depiction of the nature and form of the seabed. It has been crucial to the development of world trade and to offshore expansion in the search for hydrocarbons.

The accreditation of this course will be for a period of five years, during which the Institution will continue to review the course content and style of delivery to ensure that it continues to comply with the Institution's course accreditation standards. The university also offers a BSc Hydrography course for undergraduates, which is also accredited by the Institution.

The course will offer many opportunities for those pursuing a career in the field of hydrographic surveying. The successful completion of the MSc Hydrography course would satisfy the academic requirements for Corporate Membership and upgrade to Fellowship of the Institution.

The ICES now offers a number of accredited courses either at undergraduate or postgraduate level, which can be studied at universities and technical educational establishments across the UK, in Ireland and Hong Kong. The Institution offers both commercial management and geospatial engineering accredited courses.
