New Chair for the New Look Regions
Harry Glennie FInstCES has been appointed as the Chairman of the Institution's Regional Affairs Committee
. He joined the Institution as a Fellow in 1974. Harry was a Chief Surveyor of Taylor Woodrow for many years before forming a specialist tunnelling consultancy company two years ago, London Bridge Associates Ltd, of which he is now a Director.

He is a geospatial engineering surveyor by profession and has spent much of his career working overseas. Whilst working in Hong Kong, Harry was actively involved in establishing a region in this country for the ICES, which has now been active for over 23 years. He returned to the UK 14 years ago and now lives in London.

Since returning to the UK, he has become increasingly involved in the Institution's activities, both at national and regional level, through his involvement with various committees. Harry is a former member of the Institution's Hong Kong Regional Committee, a former Chairman of the ICES Geospatial Engineering Practices Committee (GEPC) and has been an elected member of the Council of Management for four years. He has also served on the Geospatial Engineering Board of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Mr Glennie is the Institution's immediate past President for the Presidential Year of 2001 to 2002. During his year in Office, Harry visited many of the Institution's regions and introduced a new regional structure.

Harry comments on his determination to continue his efforts to reactivate the regions in his new role as Chairman of the Regional Affairs Committee and to build upon the foundations that he set in place during his Presidential Year:

"My main objective is to ensure the successful adoption of the new regional structure, which I introduced during my term as President. The new look regional structure has involved reducing the number of mainland UK regions from twelve to eight through the amalgamation of a number of the smaller and less active regions with the larger thriving ones, to ensure that all our members are serviced and supported by an active Regional Committee. It is hoped that the new regional boundaries will help to stimulate greater interest and participation of members in the Institution's activities."

It is this new regional structure that Harry now takes hands-on responsibility for, working alongside the Regional Chairmen to make this transition a success. He will oversee the management of the Institution's regional affairs and activities across eight regions in mainland UK and the active regions in Ireland and Hong Kong.
