Geospatial Engineering Committee Appoints New Members
The Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) Geospatial Engineering Practices Committee (GEPC) has appointed Richard Maltby MInstCES and David Rodgers FInstCES as members of its specialist committee.

Richard Maltby is a busy practising geospatial engineering surveyor and a Director of his established family-owned business, Maltby Land Surveys Ltd, which employs over 30 people across three offices in Warwick, York and its headquarters in Horsham.

He is also the Chairman of the Technical Committee of The Survey Association (TSA); a representative organisation of UK private surveying firms, which boasts over 80 member companies.

Over a five year period, Richard worked with The Survey Association to design a comprehensive course to provide structured training for technicians employed in the various fields comprising geospatial engineering surveying. This course is titled Introduction to Surveying and is held at The Survey Centre in Worcester and has since been accredited by the Institution.

Richard was duly awarded the Institution's Richard Carter Prize in September 2002, as Geospatial Engineering Surveyor of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the education and training of geospatial engineering technicians following the introduction of this course. Richard is also a member of the ICES Education, Training and Membership Committee.

David Rodgers is a senior engineering lecturer for the Leeds Metropolitan University's School of Building and Environment and course leader of the ICES accredited course, BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering Commercial Management. He has been a member of the Institution for 12 years and is an active member of the Yorkshire regional committee and the Education, Training and Membership Committee.

Mike Sutton FInstCES, Chairman of the GEPC, comments on the new appointments:

"The Geospatial Engineering Practices Committee (GEPC) aims to represent the interests of those studying and employed within the field of geospatial engineering surveying and to promote standards of excellence within the profession. The membership composition of the committee broadly reflects this.

"As the ICES ambassador for membership of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), David will represent the international interests of the GEPC and those of the Institution's geospatial engineering surveying members. As a university lecturer, he is also well placed to provide insights and guidance on academic links and to represent the educational interests of those engaged in the geospatial engineering discipline."

Mike concludes: "Richard will form a vital link between the GEPC and The Survey Association, in particular for the development of NVQ qualifications and training courses for geospatial engineering technicians. Both David's and Richard's appointment will no doubt enhance the Institution's commitment to education and training."
