Practical Training for Young Professionals in Civil Engineering Contractual Procedures and Administration

Synopsis:
It is essential today that young engineers and quantity surveyors embarking in a career in the civil engineering industry have knowledge of and appreciate the need for, good contractual procedures and administration. Indeed such knowledge is a requirement for membership of The Institution of Civil Engineers and other associated Institutions. The purpose of this training course is therefore to provide the knowledge to meet these requirements by studying in depth the procedures involved in preparation and administration of a civil engineering contract. In order to meet this requirement the course is designed over an extended study period. Each period will provide a detailed study of its content and will include workshops with delegate participation and time for discussion. In addition the delegate will be required to undertake private study for assigned work which will be submitted for assessment.
Course Durations:
This course can be run in the following formats:
(a) Seven one-day workshops at one a month over a period of seven months (preferably consecutive)
or
(b) Five consecutive day workshops in one working week with a view to seeking eligibility for CITB Grant Aid (including achievement measurement by completion of various practical exercises).
Course Level:
The course is intended for Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Managers and those involved in Project Management.

Recommended 42 or 30 Hours CPD.

•     Introduction to Measurement
•     Purpose of the Bill of Quantities
•     Methods of Measurement for Civil Engineering works
•     The measurement process and preparation of quantities

Day 4 -  Estimating and Tendering
•     The purpose of  competitive tendering
•     The constituent parts of rates and prices and their contractual position
•     Estimating for Civil Engineering Works

Day  5 - Valuation                               
•     The duties and responsibilities of  the engineer,
contractor and employer
•     Measurement procedures
•     Record keeping and agreement
•     Programming techniques
•     The valuation process and procedures

Day 6 - Settlement of Accounts
•     The final account
•     Dealing with claims
•     Procedures for obtaining payment

Day 7 - Revision
•     Course overview with seminar workshops using
case studies to review the content of the course
