Kate Rowlatt (associate member) British Waterways

"Since graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a BEng (Hons) in Engineering Surveying, I have been working for British Waterways as a Graduate Hydrographic Surveyor.

This has enabled me to specialise in an area of surveying I have always been interested in. I had no previous experience of hydrographic surveying and I have found on site and office based training through the day to day work extremely useful. The majority of the work provides dredging quantities for canals, rivers, docks, reservoirs and marinas to produce bed profiles and digital ground models. I have also provided dredging quantities for major projects such as the Millennium Link in Scotland, and the restoration of the Rochdale Canal. Working for British Waterways also allows me to pursue land / topographical survey work to keep up to date with modern technology.

I am currently participating in a graduate training scheme so that I can progress not only within British Waterways but also as a member of the Institution."

Darren Perkins (student member) Kvaerner Construction

"After completing my HND in Engineering Surveying, including one year's work placement with Balfour Beatty on the Heathrow Express Rail Link, I continued my education at Nottingham Trent University to gain a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering Surveying.

On leaving university I joined Kvaerner Construction working on the Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link in Ashford, Kent. This is the second time I have worked for a major contractor. Both jobs have enabled me to experience for real, nearly all aspects of surveying covered during my time at university.

One of the biggest factors for me in joining Kvaerner Construction was the prospect of being offered the chance to start on their ICES approved training scheme, allowing me to progress through the Institution and towards full membership."
